Through the translucence of the blouse, Yáahl casts its shadow on your body within. The stretch sleeves keep the drape contained.

A hlG̱áhl/black Yáahl X̱yáalas Raven Dancing and a k’úuk/red dot are screened onto paper with dye.The image is placed on the big blouse as if it were dancing up your back and over your head, swooping down to affix or steal the sun. There are many stories in “Raven Travelling” stories where Yáahl plays tricks with the sun or moon or feathers.
Lineages were once tattooed on Haida women’s bodies. “My father told me that when he was very young, he often stayed with his grandmother when his parents were away fishing or travelling to the mainland. Old Nanaay, as everyone called her, spoke only in the Haida language, as did my Father before he went to residential school. One morning he awoke to see his Grandmother getting dressed and he saw the tattoos on her body. Being quite young, he asked her what they were, and he translated her response as, ‘Boy, that’s who you are.’” Marianne Jones of the Taas Lanaas people. “Raven Travelling:Two Centuries of Haida Art” VA
